Pathway to Teaching for Former Federal Employees

TU is offering a fast-track path to teaching for displaced federal employees in Maryland.

A grant-funded career pathway

If you’re a displaced federal employee looking for a fresh start and a career that makes a difference, you may be eligible for a unique opportunity to become a Maryland teacher.

This summer, TU is partnering with the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to offer a direct, supported path into Maryland classrooms. The program, titled “Imagine: A Pathway to Teaching,” is designed to help you transition your skills to enter the classroom ready to make a difference this fall—no prior classroom experience or teaching license required.

Limited spaces are available for this fast-track opportunity to make a meaningful career transition and positively impact K-12 Maryland students.

Admitted candidates will receive a stipend to support training and program participation.

Program Details

"Imagine: A Pathway to Teaching" program participants will collaborate with TU instructional leaders for comprehensive classroom preparation.

What to Expect

A week of hands-on preparation

Join the College of Education July 28-Aug 1 for an immersive, weeklong training experience focused on:

  • lesson planning and curriculum development
  • classroom management strategies
  • tips for building relationships with students
  • inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Maryland education standards

Ongoing Mentorship 

After your initial training, you’ll be paired with an experienced teaching mentor who’ll guide you through your classroom transition and offer continued support throughout your first year.

Classroom Placement Support 

Once you have completed the program, you’ll be conditionally qualified to accept teaching positions in select Maryland counties. TU will support your placement and provide coaching and assistance to begin teaching in the 2025-26 school year.

Customized Licensure Plans

TU will provide personalized advising to help you identify the licensure program best suited to your goals. With a clear roadmap and ongoing support, you’ll gain the knowledge and tools you need to meet all certification requirements with confidence.

Financial Support

As a part of the program, you’ll receive a teacher’s salary and a stipend to support your training and program participation.

Program Eligibility

To qualify for this special TU Pathway to Teaching program, candidates must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree
  • have been displaced from a federal job or a federally supported contract due to layoffs or restructuring
  • attend and complete the training experience from July 18 to Aug 1
  • be available to begin teaching in the Fall 2025 school year
